Some basic theory. Typical stun gun works by delivering a train of weak high voltage pulses, with a high repetition rate up to 200 per second. This makes your muscles work very rapidly and convert sugar to lactyc acid, what causes you "feel tired". It takes three to five seconds for this effect to come. SO....THIS IS PURE SHIT !!! Imagine youself at the place of attacker - you will kick ass of a stungun's user before he understands what's happened :-D
Now imagine a big hammer which strikes your head :-) What you feel? IMMEDIATE SHOCK !!! Talking about stun guns, this means to deliver a POWERFUL PULSE, which will leave attacker unconscious instantly!! AIR TASER stun gun uses exact method.

Back to theory...Typical stun gun consists of several functional units - charge unit (1), energy storing capacitor (2), discharge unit (3) and an output HV transformer (4). You can see them on the image below. The operation is simple. Capacitor is being discharged onto the primary winding of transformer, forming high voltage pulses on the other side. It looks very simple, but there's a huge problem, which makes nearly impossible to make a powerful stun gun using this principle. It's hidden into transformer. It has many limitations, such as size, special equipment and calculations needed to make it effective. Besides, it cannot supply powerful pulse due to limited core size.
TASER developers found another way. They use HV transofrmer only to transfer low-power ionization or "ignition" pulse. This represents a very good conductor, and the main power is delivered straight to the body throught it, without any losses. TASER has very complicated circuitry, using multiple transformer windings, multiple spark gaps and other stuff nobody needs ;-) What we did? We made it 3 times more simple!
